Jermaca Brown came to Rhode Island from her home state of Texas to intern with Summer OFF in 2015. Now, she lives here and serves on staff with Faith Community Church as the Community Outreach Coordinator and Youth Director. We loved having Jermaca as an intern, and we are excited for the work she is doing now!
TPC: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Where are you from? What are some of your interests? What did you study in school?
JB: My name is Jermaca Brown I am from a small Texas town called Fairfield. I went to college at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, TX and studied Kinesiology with the plans of becoming a basketball coach. I love all things Texas and love watching the Dallas Cowboys. I love sports, music, and traveling.
TPC: How did you become involved with Summer OFF?
JB: I became involved with Summer OFF through an internship with my school. A local church planter was looking for two interns to come and serve ministries in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
TPC: What did you do during your internship with Summer OFF? What were some takeaways from your time as an intern?
JB: I participated in one week of Summer OFF in Dexter Park. We helped alongside a partner church to provide crafts, games, and refreshments for the kids in the park.
Kids ClubTPC: Now you are on staff at Faith Community Church. Tell us a little bit about how that came about and what you are doing in your role there.
JB: During my time at Summer OFF I met another Philip Center intern, Meagan Peterson. I would later learn that Meagan was on staff at the church and I shared with her my love for Providence and my desire to be a part of something like this (Summer OFF). Through our friendship and her connection at the church, Pastor John reached out to me about the possibility of moving and joining their team. After a few months of praying and talking it over with some mentors and close friends, I decided to take a giant leap of faith and join the FCC team.
Kids Club Door with KidsMy role there is a little bit of everything. My title is Community Outreach Coordinator/Youth Director. I keep up with our community partners, we see how we can come alongside with other organizations in the neighborhood and join in on what they are doing or see how they can join in with us. As Youth Director, I work alongside Pastor John to plan out lessons and events for our teens and we do Kid’s Club once a week for kids ages 5-12. We do games, pizza, and a Bible lesson.
TPC: How can we pray for you, for West End Community Church, and for your community?
JB: Pray for parents. We are so blessed and grateful for all the joyful and helpful teens and kids who show up every week on their own. We would love to see some of those parents come and be a part of FCC. Pray for hope, restoration, and job opportunities for our neighborhood.
